Hybrid Retrofit Electrification Upgrade for Dock 5 Apartment Tower

Premium Dock 5 Apartment Tower Receives Hybrid Heating System Upgrade.

Situated in the heart of Docklands, Dock 5 spans 30 floors and houses 148 apartments. Widely regarded as one of Melbourne’s most sought-after and premium waterfront addresses since its completion in 2006, this apartment tower features breathtaking views and sophisticated living.

Automatic Heating designed, supplied and commissioned a commercial hybrid heating system to replace Dock 5’s previous gas boilers. This upgrade was completed in 2025 and has since been providing residents with energy-efficient, reliable heating.

Project Overview

This retrofit electrification project has transformed Dock 5, replacing existing gas boilers with a highly reliable, energy-efficient hybrid heating system.

Engineered for reliability, the upgraded primary heating system features electric natural refrigerant heat pumps with backup gas condensing water heaters. Six Revere CHE-015 heat pumps maintain the majority of the load, up to 90%, while two Meridian City condensing water heaters back up the system to take care of peak demand, modulating accordingly.

Revere CHE-015 heat pumps use R290 natural refrigerant with low global warming potential (GWP), making them an environmentally conscious addition to a hybrid heating system. All Revere CHE heat pumps operate at ambient temperatures from -25 to 45ºC and are suitable for implementation in a wide variety of climates.

Hybrid Heating System

Features of this all-outdoor hybrid heating system include:

  • 6 x Revere CHE-015 R290 natural refrigerant heat pumps – provide the large majority of heating, able to heat water to 75°C
  • 2 x Meridian City 90 kW condensing water heaters – for built-in redundancy as required
  • Control Box – to enable the heat pumps and stage them accordingly

When you combine electric heat pumps with gas solutions such as the Meridian City, the benefits are substantial. With net efficiencies exceeding 105% at 50/30°C return temperatures, the Meridian City utilises premium condensing technology in a compact, wall-hung design for optimum output without using critical floor space.

Benefits of a Hybrid Heating System

Hybrid heating systems provide many benefits, including energy-efficient, low-emissions heating, reliability and cost savings.

The biggest benefit is reliability through redundancy. By sharing the load across multiple heat pumps and water heaters, heating continues even while a unit is being serviced or is out of action. For buildings seeking a future-proof, sustainable first step towards complete electrification, a hybrid heating and hot water solution helps to lower emissions while still meeting peak demand.
